What’s The Difference Between Lip Filler and a Lip Flip?

Lip flips and lip filler are often confused with one another. But the truth is that they’re each distinct procedures with their own unique outcomes! If you’re looking into lip enhancement but are unsure which route to take, understanding the key differences between these popular treatments is a great place to start.

Registered nurse lip filler

This blog will guide you through what each treatment involves, their benefits, potential downsides, and what you can realistically expect from the results. By taking the mystery out of these lip enhancement procedures, we hope to empower you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions that align perfectly with your aesthetic goals!

What Is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a popular aesthetic treatment that enhances the volume and defining features of your lips through multiple minimally invasive injections. Using dermal filler, consisting of hyaluronic acid, this procedure not only adds fullness but can also improve the overall symmetry of the lips.

What to Expect During a Lip Filler Appointment
  • An initial consultation to discuss desired outcomes

  • Application of a strong numbing cream for comfort

  • A qualified registered nurse will carefully inject filler into specific areas of your lips to achieve your desired fullness and shape

  • The procedure is typically about 30 minutes

Typical Results From Lip Filler
  • You’ll see results instantly. Lips will appear significantly fuller and more contoured right after the procedure, and two weeks later the swelling will have subsided. Peak results are visible 3-4 weeks after treatment.

  • Results typically last between 6 to 18 months but will vary from person to person

  • Over time, filler gradually breaks down and is absorbed by the body

Lip Filler Side Effects & Safety Considerations
  • Expect numbness or tingling right after the procedure due to the lidocaine in the filler.

  • Common post-treatment effects include swelling, temporary bumps, redness, bruising, and tenderness.

  • A dull ache and tenderness may persist but typically subsides within 2-3 days.

  • Mild, non-painful swelling can be expected to last for up to two weeks.

  • Bruising, if any, is most visible the day after treatment and generally fades over 7-14 days; in rare cases, it may last longer than two weeks.

  • Take proper precautions and always work with an experienced & licensed physician or nurse to reduce the risk of complications.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is a cosmetic procedure that uses a small amount of neurotoxin to enhance the upper lip’s appearance without adding volume. This technique relaxes the muscles around the lip, causing the lip to slightly lift upward and outward which makes the lip appear fuller.

What to Expect During a Lip Flip
  • A brief consultation to discuss your ideal results

  • Small injections of the neurotoxins, either Botox® or Dysport, are made along the edges of the upper lip

  • Muscles around your upper lip relax over the course of two weeks allowing more of the body of the lip to be visible.

  • This is a quick procedure and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes

Typical Results From a Lip Flip
  • You’ll see a subtle yet noticeable enhancement in the shape of your lips

  • Full effects are typically visible within 7-14 days after treatment

  • Results last for 2-4 months and effects gradually wear off

Lip Flip Side Effects & Safety Considerations
  • Expect minor swelling, temporary bumps, redness, bruising, and sensations like tingling or mild itching after a lip flip.

  • Avoid applying makeup over the injected area for 90 minutes post-treatment to reduce infection risk.

  • Only touch the injected area with clean hands, and use clean makeup tools and towels.

  • Avoid putting pressure on the injected areas for the rest of the day.

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol, engaging in strenuous exercise, and exposure to UV rays and high-heat environments for the rest of the day.

A Comparison of Lip Filler and Lip Flips

Both lip filler and lip flips aim to enhance the aesthetics of your lips. But they do so in different ways, using different materials and techniques. This section provides a detailed comparison of lip filler and lip flips in terms of procedure, results, cost, and suitability to help you make an informed decision that perfectly aligns with your personal goals and lifestyle, and that might be one of the two options here, none, or both.

Lip Flips
Procedure

Involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the lips to add volume and shape. This procedure takes about 60 minutes.

Uses a small amount of neurotoxins to relax the muscles around the upper lip, causing it to curl outward subtly. This procedure usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Results

Immediate enhancement in volume and contour with best results in 3-4 weeks. Results last 6 to 18 months, gradually fading as the body absorbs the filler.

Gives you a subtle lift rather than added volume. Effects become visible within 7-14 days and typically last 2 to 4 months. Periodic treatments are required for a maintained effect.

Cost

We charge $500 for a full syringe and $350 for a half syringe.

Lip flips at Essentials Medi Spa cost $60 when done alone, or 10.00 per unit when done as part of your other regular botox cosmetic treatments.

Recovery

Can involve some bruising and swelling, with recovery taking a few days. A numbing cream can be used to make the procedure more comfortable.

Small amounts of swelling, temporary bumps, redness, and bruising can occur.

Ideal Candidates

Suitable for those seeking significant enhancement in lip volume and shape.

Best for individuals looking for a subtle lift to the upper lip. A lip flip is a great treatment for those with thin lips, particularly those who want to prevent a “gummy” smile.

Real Results

Sometimes seeing is believing, especially when it comes to aesthetic enhancements. Here are before and after images of our clients who have completed either a lip flip or lip filler procedure.

Lip Filler Before and After

Lip Flip Before and After

Whether you’re drawn to the dramatic volume of lip filler or the subtle elegance of a lip flip, these real-life results can help you visualize the impact of each procedure. Of course, it is important to note that results will vary from person to person. There are several reasons for this variance, including individual anatomy, the specific technique used, or how one’s body reacts to the treatment.

Choosing the Right Procedure for You

Deciding on the right lip enhancement procedure is as personal as choosing a hairstyle that suits your face shape and personality. Whether you opt for lip filler or a lip flip depends on several factors that align with your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.

Here’s how to determine which procedure might be best for you:

Evaluate Your Aesthetic Goals
  • Think about whether your primary desire is to add volume (lip fillers) or enhance your natural shape by subtly flipping the upper lip (lip flip).

  • Consider how dramatic you want the change to be. Filler can provide a significant difference, while flips offer a more understated modification.

Consider Your Lifestyles
  • Lip filler requires less frequent touch-ups than lip flips, which may need maintenance appointments every 3-4 months.

  • Determine your budget. Lip flips are generally less expensive but require more frequent treatment sessions for continued results.

Consult a Professional
  • Always consult with an experienced & qualified physician or nurse who can provide personalized advice based on your facial structure, lip anatomy, and personal health.

  • Make sure the professional you work with is certified and has experience with both procedures. It’s crucial to trust the expertise of the practitioner handling your medical aesthetic treatments.

Understand the Risks and Rewards
  • Be conscious of the potential risks and side effects associated with each procedure. A professional will help guide you through these during your consultation.

  • Set realistic expectations by discussing what each procedure can and cannot achieve for your specific case.

Perfect Your Pout With Lip Enhancement

Both lip flips and lip filler offer exciting possibilities to enhance your natural beauty. But the best choice depends on your individual desires, lifestyle, and the professional guidance you receive.

Remember: your aesthetic journey should be as personal and informed as possible. Always consult with experienced professionals who can provide tailored advice and perform these procedures with the utmost care and expertise.

As you consider your options, think about what will make you feel most confident.
